I support public awareness and actions about the reauthorization of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, which is set to expire on December 31, 2017.

As its title suggests, FISA was intended to surveil foreign agents and protect our national security.  However, the government has secretly misused and abused the power to not only threaten the constitutional rights of all Americans, but also target innocent Asian Americans, and caused devastating damages to their life, career and family without accountability.

A joint letter by 15 major Asian American organizations was sent to Congress on November 29, 2017 to urge the following key provisions as part of the reauthorization:

  • A specific sunset date within 4 to 6 years
  • Maximum reforms for oversight, accountability, and transparency
  • Stronger protection of privacy and civil liberty
